NetWorkers, Working to End Malaria

Malaria is a disease caused by mosquito-borne parasites. In the undeveloped world, more than 500 million people are stricken with this disease annually. Malaria is responsible for over two million deaths each year. It kills one child every 30 seconds.

The NetWorkers Malaria Prevention Program was developed by International Health Ministries in response to the tragic human toll of this disease. For poor people living in often remote rural areas of Africa and Asia, preventing malaria is the key to protecting their health. Led by the Presbyterian Women groups, congregations in the United States support the NetWorkers projects by helping to purchase nets, insecticide and educational materials, and by sewing mosquito nets from kits.

PW OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES

Presbyterian Women (PW) would like to encourage your participation in any or all of the following outreach opportunities.  Please put all collected items in the various “PW Outreach” boxes below the officers’ boxes.  We welcome your help!

·        Campbell’s Labels for Education are collected for Thornwell Home for Children.  Thornwell is located in Clinton, South Carolina and is supported by Presbyterian Church (USA) congregations in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.  Lists of eligible products are available in the information rack outside the church office.  Please trim labels as indicated in the list under “What To Save”.

·        Tyson Chicken product labels are collected for Thornwell Home.  Qualified frozen products are marked “Tyson Project A+” and the packages indicate the labels to save.

·        Cancelled postage stamps are collected for The Duvall Home in Florida.  The home, an affiliate of the Presbyterian Church (USA), cares for people with physical and mental disabilities.  Any postage stamps with or without the cancellation mark can be used.

·        Box Tops for Education found on Generals Mills product packages are collected to benefit Thornwell Home.

·        BI-LO BONUSCARDS can be registered with the BI-LO Boosterplus program to have 1% of your purchases donated to Area Churches Serving Together (ACTS).  An ACTS enrollment scan card is needed to register your BI-LO BONUSCARD.  These are available in the information rack outside the church office.

·        Hotel samples of soaps, shampoos, etc. are collected and donated to the Free Medical Clinic of Aiken County.

·        Knitted or Crocheted Baby Caps are needed for Aiken Regional Medical Center and Presbyterian hospitals overseas.  Patterns are available from Catherine Vandergrift (642-4788).

·        Mission Sewing Projects including hospital gowns, baby gowns, baby blankets, shorts and dresses benefit the migrant ministry and overseas missions.  Sewing workdays are held throughout the year to work on these projects.  Watch the newsletter for dates and details.

·        Stuffed Animals are collected to share with the children that attend the Aiken County summer migrant school.
