Recognizing that the hope we have in Christ is lived out in our hope for one another, we respond with gifts that help our sisters and brothers around the world find hope for a brighter future. The Presbyterian Hunger Program receives 36 percent of undesignated One Great Hour of Sharing gifts, while the Self-Development of People and Presbyterian Disaster Assistance each receives 32 percent. The Presbyterian Hunger Program (PHP) is a ministry of the PC(USA) working with congregations and partners around the globe to alleviate hunger and eliminate its causes. The Self-Development of People is a ministry of the PC(USA) along with ecumenical partners working to empower economically poor, oppressed, and disadvantaged people who are seeking to change the structures that perpetuate poverty, oppression, and injustice. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance enables congregations and mission partners of the Presbyterian Church (USA) to witness to the healing love of Christ through caring for communities adversely affected by crisis and catastrophic events.
Our 2010 summer intergenerational mission will be Sunday, June 27-Friday, July 2 (returning early afternoon). This year we will return to Cosby, Tennessee, and serve through the Sunset Gap Community Center (a mission of Holston and East Tennessee Presbyteries). The 2007 participants fondly remember getting to know Ralph and working to make his home more livable by constructing a wheelchair ramp, painting, and improving the indoor plumbing. Please join us for an information meeting on Sunday, March 14, from 7:00-7:30 p.m. in room 2. Questions? Please contact Holly or Allison. Spaces are limited.
Dental Hygiene Education Your enthusiastic and generous response to the request for dental supplies allowed the team to present dental hygiene education to 370 children and adults in five settings. Each individual received a bag containing a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss and a Spanish/English instruction sheet that paralled what was taught in each session.
Eco Stove Progress in La Montanita / Teo One of the major illnesses in the 2 villages adopted by Frst Pres is respitory problems. This is caused by not having adequate ventilation in their homes. They cook by burning wood and the smoke fills their homes. On our recent mission trip, we were able to build three Eco stoves. We built the first one, they helped with the second, and they built the third. With HAF providing the materials, they now have the skills to continue building stoves on their own. Based on the monies received from the Global Mission offering, we will be able to provide materials for 30 stoves. This year our focus is on prevention, helping to avoid health problems. The stove is one of many similar health programs we have begun.
