Capital Funds Campaign – Mission ElementsLocal: Free Medical Clinic of Aiken: ($30,000) The Free Medical Clinic of Aiken County was established in December 1998. Several individuals and organizations in the community joined together to form the Acts of Caring Clinic. Those involved at the time perceived a need for providing free medical care for uninsured low-income individuals and families who reside in Aiken County. In 2003, the name of the clinic was changed to the Free Medical Clinic. The clinic is a mission outreach ministry for all the churches that support it. In 2004, the clinic provided medical care for more than 700 patients during more than 2600 clinic visits. The medical care provided consists of health education, primary care, specialist care and prescription medication. The clinic is staffed by 4 part-time employees and more than 40 volunteers from the medical profession and other fields with administrative, support and managerial skills. The clinic is dependent on financial support from local and regional organizations, individual donations, churches and fund raising events. Regional: Presbyterian College: ($15,000) PC is regarded by many as the best combination of academic prowess and unapologetic church relationship among all PCUSA colleges. It is currently conducting a campaign to provide more aid for students, and to upgrade facilities. FPCA and other Presbyterian congregations in SC and GA have a longstanding tradition of financial support for PC. A couple in this congregation has already pledged to match up to $15,000 as a challenge to our members individually or collectively. Columbia Theological Seminary, Atlanta: ($15,000) As our regional seminary, CTS trains more PCUSA pastors than any other institution in the country, but has to limit enrollments due to size of facilities and faculty. CTS is appealing to churches and individuals in our region for funds to help enlarge its capacities, in order to address the crucial shortage of ordained clergy. Also, because the PCUSA can no longer afford to operate the Presbyterian Historical Society at Montreat, Columbia will now house and maintain the historical archives of southern Presbyterian churches (including this congregation and presbytery) so that they will not have to be shipped to Philadelphia or discarded. Columbia also needs help to defray this expense. Global: Mwandi Mission: ($25,000) The Mwandi village hospital is a bush hospital in Zambia, Africa with a capacity of 200 beds. It was rebuilt and expanded by participating PCUSA churches primarily in the Southeastern states. Our church was involved from 1991 through 1995. Eight members from this congregation were commissioned and sent as volunteer missionaries to work on the construction of the hospital, and committed $30,000 towards the construction of the Pediatrics ward and $2500 for windows in the adjoining chapel. The hospital has flourished since then and now has two full-time doctors to head the staff. However, there is a continuing need for many items such as a vehicle that can go off-road into the bush as an ambulance and bring clinical care to isolated villages. |
